Vitamin Function Imbalance causes:

Thiamin (Aneurin, Vitamin B1)

Involved in carbohydrate metabolism. Requirement is dependent on the carbohydrate content of the diet.

Deficiency - Anorexia, neurological disorders (especially of the postural mechanisms) followed ultimately by weakness, heart failure and death. Can occur, especially in cats, as a result of feeding large amounts of certain types of raw fish which contain the enzyme thiaminase. In addition, the vitamin is progressively destroyed by high temperatures and under certain conditions of processing.

Toxicity - Low toxicity (means difficult to overdose)

Pantothenic Acid (Vitamin B3)

A constituent of co-enzyme A which is essential for carbohydrate, fat and amino acid metabolism.

Deficiency - Depressed growth, fatty liver, gastrointestinal disturbances (including ulcers), convulsions, coma and death. Naturally occurring deficiencies unlikely.

Toxicity - Not reported.

Niacin (Nicotinamide and Nicotinic acid) (Vitamin B6)

A component of two important co-enzymes, the nicotinamide adenine dinucleotides, which are required for oxidation-reduction reactions necessary for the utilisation of all the major nutrients.

Deficiency - Pellagra in humans and blacktongue in dogs and cats; characterised by inflammation and ulceration of the oral cavity with thick, blood-stained saliva and foul breath.

Toxicity - Not considered toxic.

Pyridoxine (Vitamin B6)

Involved in a wide range of enzyme systems associated with nitrogen and amino acid metabolism.

Deficiency - Anorexia, weight loss and anaemia. Irreversible kidney damage in cats.

Toxicity - Not considered toxic.
