The Hon. Bruce Billson MP
PARLIAMENTARY SECRETARY FOR FOREIGN AFFAIRS AND TRADE

Media Release AA 04 076 - Tuesday 23 November 2004
Aussie dog water to lap up US drinks market
Parliamentary Secretary for Foreign Affairs and Trade, Bruce Billson, today praised the export success of the small NSW company Dog Plus, saying that the AUSFTA would pave the way for other local businesses to enter the US market.
"In just twelve months since its flavoured dog water was developed, Dog Plus has scored a lucrative deal with Nutri-Vet who will distribute Dog Plus products to pet store chain PETCO's 670 stores across the US and Canada,"Mr Billson said.
"The deal is currently worth $50,000 to the small husband and wife business team and is expected to reach an annual $2 million over the next twelve months, providing not only a tremendous boost for the company but also the local economy by generating additional employment.
"The success of Dog Plus is yet another example of the potential the US market offers to small and medium sized Australian companies,"Mr Billson said.
"The US is the most dynamic economy in the world and the AUSFTA coming into effect on January 1 2005, will streamline access between the business communities of both our countries.
"The Coalition's election commitment of 30 new Export Facilitators working specifically on the AUSFTA means Austrade will hit the ground running in identifying opportunities for Australian businesses of all sizes,"Mr Billson said.
Owner and inventor of Dog Plus Andrew Larkey said that by utilising Austrade's strong business networks he was able to secure a deal in the US.
"I was aware that the US market is the most lucrative market for a product of this type where the dog population is nearly 60 million. Austrade advised us on our export strategy, arranged our introduction with Nutri-Vet and helped us make the right moves. There is no doubt that this increased our speed into the market,"Mr Larkey said.
"We exported our first shipment of flavours to the United States in August, just six months after we officially launched our product in Australia and that is something that would have been impossible without the support of Austrade,"Mr Larkey said.
In 2003-2004, Austrade assisted 251 Australian businesses to achieve more than $926 million in export sales to the US.
